Celebrations filled the air at the Shayamoya Sports Field in Kokstad during the Greater Kokstad Mayoral Imbizo, as entrepreneurs stepped forward to receive funding and working equipment from the Greater Kokstad Municipality.
The initiative was designed to confront the structural barriers that continue to limit local businesses, including a lack of start-up capital, limited market access, and inadequate mentorship opportunities. Beyond financial support, the programme offers beneficiaries business development services and guidance aimed at helping enterprises transition from survivalist ventures to scalable operations.
One of the beneficiaries, Yongama Mabusela of Blue Signe Recording Studios in Bhongweni, Kokstad, expressed appreciation for the municipality’s support in creating opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs. For Mabusela, the moment represented years of persistence.
“I encourage fellow entrepreneurs not to lose hope or give up, but to register their businesses and remain committed to their goals. My patience and perseverance have ultimately paid off,” he said.
Greater Kokstad Mayor Lwando Madikizela urged beneficiaries to think beyond Kokstad and provincial borders in order to position their enterprises for national and global markets. He also encouraged them to innovate and pursue sustainable growth opportunities.
“Our efforts to stimulate economic development have yielded positive results. Initiatives aimed at supporting local businesses, attracting investment and promoting tourism are creating jobs and contributing to economic diversification. Greater Kokstad is increasingly being recognised as a hub for entrepreneurial activity and innovation. At the same time, we are paying close attention to infrastructure development and environmental sustainability,” he said.
In addition, the Chairperson of the Kokstad ICT Sector, Zizipho Nogwaza, underscored the importance of collaboration between government and business in driving inclusive economic development.
“We have been informed that the new financial year is approaching, and as businesses, we must be prepared to work closely with departments that can make funding more accessible. We need to ensure that our businesses are registered and compliant with all relevant regulations and procedures so that they can receive the attention of potential sponsors, clients and partners. It is important for all entrepreneurs and small business owners to take advantage of such opportunities, as they can play a significant role in growing and sustaining a business,” she added.
