Harry Gwala Marathon to celebrate its 10 years

The Harry Gwala District Municipality is gearing up to host the Harry Gwala Marathon on Sunday, March 23, and this year’s event is extra special as it marks the 10th anniversary of the marathon. The event is expected to draw a large crowd, with at least 2,000 people anticipated to participate.

To celebrate this milestone, the municipality is hosting various races, including a 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half-marathon, 10km, and 5km fun run. The event promises to be an exciting one, with runners from across South Africa and beyond expected to participate. On the economic front, the marathon is expected to give the local economy a significant boost. With more people, including tourists and athletes, flocking to the area, local businesses are expected to benefit from increased spending.

The event is being hosted by the Genius Athletic Club, and the municipality is urging residents and visitors to come out and support the runners, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking for a fun day out, the Harry Gwala Marathon promises to be an unforgettable experience. The Harry Gwala District Municipality is inviting business owners to participate in the upcoming marathon by registering their stalls at the Local Economic Development (LED) offices. This applies to both local businesses and those from neighbouring areas like Ixopo.

By hosting the marathon, the municipality aims to boost the local economy and improve the lives of community members.  This event presents a valuable opportunity for individuals, including those with limited income, to sell their goods and earn some extra money. To register, business owners can visit the LED offices at uMzimkhulu Local Municipality and provide the necessary information. This will enable them to trade during the marathon and contribute to the local economy. According to the organizer of the Marathon Themba Gumede who is from the Genius Athletic Club , the race (42.2km) is expected  start from R612 High-flats and finish of at uMzimkhulu TVET Collage. Meanwhile  addressing the media  Harry Gwala  District Municipality Mayor Zamo Nxumalo called upon the community to come in numbers  as this event does not only as accommodate  competitors but  it’s also to promote healthy living.
