The Greater Kokstad Local Municipality has officially launched a first-of-its-kind sporting initiative aimed at promoting social cohesion, tourism attraction, and local economic development. The MM’s Fun Run and Walk is expected to  be on the 28 of February 2026.

Speaking during the launch, municipal leadership emphasised that the programme is designed to unite communities both within and outside the municipality, while positioning Greater Kokstad as a growing tourism destination. “This initiative is about building social cohesion within the institution and promoting a positive image of our work among the residents of Greater Kokatsd ,” GKM Mayor Lwanda Madikizela said. Beyond fostering unity, the event is expected to play a significant role in stimulating tourism and attracting visitors to the area. “When people come to Kokstad  for this event, it speaks directly to tourism attraction and promotion,” Madikizela added.

The MM’s Fun Run, described as one of the biggest to be hosted in the municipality, has already attracted strong sponsorship support from across the district. Organisers expressed appreciation to all sponsors who partnered with the municipality to ensure its success. “We want to thank all the sponsors who have joined us for this important event. We know it is going to be a big occasion”, said the Mayor.

The Fun Run and Walk  will take place on Saturday ( 28-02-26) and is expected to draw athletes, prominent figures, and community members. A specially designed route has been prepared to accommodate participants, particularly competitive athletes. Municipal leaders indicated that plans are underway to formalise the event as an annual fixture, with endorsement processes expected to be concluded on the 28th. In addition to competitive races, the programme will include a variety run and walk, encouraging broad participation from residents. “Whether you are running or walking, this is about promoting a healthy lifestyle. We want all of us to be part of this important occasion,” explained Madikizela.

The Mayor has also confirmed that local vendors will be given an opportunity to trade during the fundraising event, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to inclusive economic growth. Responding to a question on whether informal traders would be accommodated, the Mayor said the event forms part of the municipality’s broader local economic development strategy. “Yes, vendors will be allowed to participate during this event. This forms part of our local economic development,” said the Mayor.

He reiterated that while the municipality is focused on tourism attraction, it is equally committed to ensuring that economic benefits extend to local businesses and traders. “Our LED office is taking tourism promotion very seriously. This initiative will promote economic development, including indigenous prosperity,” he said. The Mayor further explained that one of the municipality’s strategic  pillars is to position Greater Koksatd as a centre of economic prosperity driven by business and service. “Those who are part of our social and economic ecosystem must participate in the benefits. That is how policy should enhance livelihoods,” he added. However, he clarified that trading will be regulated to ensure proper coordination and compliance. “It will not be a free-for-all. Vendors must be registered so that we know who is participating.  The municipality believes that structured vendor participation will not only ensure order during the event but also create sustainable opportunities linked to tourism, community development, and long-term economic growth.
