“We are escalating the matter to the provincial department of education for further engagement and push our demands”
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Harry Gwala region recently embarked a march outside the Department of Basic Education offices in Ixopo, according to the EFF, the march was part of their oversight efforts in government institutions, such as health department.
According to the EFF, it was unfortunate that no one from the Department was present to receive the memorandum of grievances, which was a major point of contention for the EFF. Regional Secretary Zukisani Tshangase expressed disappointment that the Department failed to honour the march. The EFF’s concerns include the continued use of pit toilets in schools, with a demand for flushing toilets to be installed with immediate effect, particularly in Hluthankungu primary school. They also demand that vacant principal position in Emazabekweni primary schools be declared and filled. Furthermore, the EFF is calling for proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for general workers in primary schools and for computer labs to be operational with a dedicated teacher assigned with immediate effect.
Additionally, the EFF is demanding an investigation into the principal of Ixopo primary school, alleging use of alcohol on school premises, ill-treatment of staff, and using school facilities for personal gain. The EFF believes that these issues need to be addressed urgently to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for students.
The march was led by Busisiwe Zulu, a Provincial Command Team (PCT) member. The EFF’s actions highlight the need for improved service delivery and accountability in the Department of Basic Education, Department of Health and Municipalities.
In conclusion, the Regional Secretary stated that the EFF is escalating the matter to the provincial Department of education for further engagement and to push their demands. “We are escalating the matter to the provincial department of education for further engagement and push our demands. If the province fails, we are pushing it to national,” said Tshangase. Although they have not received a response yet, the EFF has already submitted the letter, signalling their determination to see these issues through.
However, the KZN Department of Basic Education head of communication Muzi Mahlambi told this publication that they are not aware of the march but he will find out from the District Director. Due to the deadline, unfortunately we could not get his comment on time.
