“I did not think that by this time, there would still be people living in such conditions, especially after the issue of Tebetebe,”
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Alfred Nzo has expressed frustration over the deplorable condition of the Ndakeni access road in Ward 6 of the Umzimvubu Local Municipality. The community has been struggling with the poor road conditions, with residents resorting to carrying coffins on their heads due to the lack of accessibility. This situation persists 31 years into democracy.
DA PR Councillor Nozi Mantshongo expressed her disappointment, stating that she thought the responsible authorities would have shown some accountability by now. “I did not think that by this time, there would still be people living in such conditions, especially after the issue of Tebetebe,” she said. Mantshongo emphasized that not everyone can leave their communities to seek employment in cities like Johannesburg and that some residents are committed to making a living in their hometowns. “Some of us will remain here and we want service delivery,” she said.
Mantshongo criticized the practice of politicians making promises during election campaigns only to fail to deliver once elected. “When it’s time for elections, some deliver manifestos with nice promises, and people buy these manifestos and vote for you, thinking they will get development and services. Then, you’re elected, and you fail to deliver,” she said. She questioned why elected leaders don’t engage directly with the community to understand their needs. “Why is it that every time our people’s needs must be televised?” she asked.
The DA highlighted that the province is often ridiculed by other provinces and classified as the “Cutting Edge” people, yet it remains the poorest province in South Africa. “Our province is the laughingstock from other provinces… it is the poorest province in South Africa,” Mantshongo said, emphasizing the need for action. She also questions the load shedding, saying how come Ndakeni still experiencing it?
In response, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality clarified that the Ndakeni Access Road is scheduled for implementation during the 2025/2026 Financial Year. The project includes comprehensive maintenance works and the installation of stormwater pipes. The municipality had previously appointed a contractor who declined the appointment, and an alternative contractor has now been appointed. The community will be informed of the project commencement date, which will be announced by the Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu.
