Boosting Local Agriculture: Matatiele Municipality launches Innovative Incubator Program

The Matatiele Local Municipality, in partnership with Alfred Nzo Agricultural Incubator, has launched an agricultural incubator training program aimed at empowering local farmers. According to CEO Randolph Meth, the program received over 700 applications, with 30 candidates selected for the first intake.

As per the CEO, the selection criteria prioritized geographical location, focusing on residents of Matatiele. The program equips farmers with essential skills in production, business management, and marketing. When asked about challenges faced by farmers, the CEO highlighted the support provided to address these issues. Interestingly, two participants are focusing on cannabis production.

According to Meth this program is designed to equip farmers with essential skills in production, business management, and marketing. In addition, the initiative is meant to enhance food security and nutrition, also increasing local food production and accessibility. Furthermore, Stimulating Local Economy through Agricultural Expansion, creating employment opportunities along the agricultural value chain generating revenue through increased agricultural productivity and trade.

The CEO further shared that, to guarantee farmers’ success in their agricultural endeavours, the training concentrates on four essential areas: planning, record keeping, handling various personalities, and managing profitability during seasonal cash flows. Furthermore, the farm-together training program equips farmers with the information, abilities, and self-assurance they need to thrive in the competitive world of agribusiness by emphasizing these crucial areas. “This initiative’s accredited training and incubator program is dedicated to empowering farmers and promoting agricultural growth and development,” said Meth.

In conclusion, the agricultural incubator program’s focus on cropping, and is informed by strategic partnerships, such as with Olaylu, a research development partner. Their expertise in soil testing and organic fertilizer production using seaweed can significantly benefit local farmers. By empowering farmers to produce and sell their own organic fertilizers, the program creates a sustainable and profitable model for agricultural growth.
