“Our work must build on the successes achieved before us and ensure that those successes are sustained and strengthened.”
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has elected a new Executive Mayor and Deputy Executive Mayor following the resignation of Nomasomi Mshuqwana, who stepped down with immediate effect after serving in the position for approximately two months. Mshuqwana was appointed as Executive Mayor on 14 December 2025 after the resignation of the former Executive Mayor. Prior to this, she served as the Deputy Executive Mayor. Her resignation resulted in the district municipality being left without both an Executive Mayor and a Deputy Executive Mayor.
In response, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality convened a special council meeting to fill the vacant leadership positions. During the sitting, council first proceeded with the election of the Deputy Executive Mayor. Mshuqwana was nominated by the African National Congress (ANC) and accepted the nomination. Five councillors from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) abstained from the process, leaving her as the sole nominee. She was subsequently elected as the Deputy Executive Mayor.
The Council then proceeded with the election of the Executive Mayor of the district. The ANC nominated its preferred candidate Tsileng Sobuthongo, while the EFF nominee form was disqualified by the Speaker of the Council due to the misprint on the form by the party, leaving Sobuthongo with no opposing nomination, the ANC candidate was elected as the Executive Mayor of the Alfred Nzo District Municipality. The newly elected Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo previously served as the Mayor of Ntabankulu Local Municipality and is also the Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress.
In her inaugural address, the Executive Mayor said, “We receive this baton fully aware of the responsibility entrusted to us. Our work must build on the successes achieved before us and ensure that those successes are sustained and strengthened.” She emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and working together across political lines to ensure effective service delivery.
The ANDM Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo committed to leading with humility, discipline, and dedication, prioritizing the needs of the communities, strengthening governance, and remaining focused on improving the lives of the people. “This is not the work of one individual, but of all of us, let us move forward united in purpose and committed to serving the people of this district,” said the newly elected Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo.
