The Alfred Nzo region of the African National Congress (ANC) has found itself at the center of a swirling controversy. A leaked letter, which the ANC has refused to confirm or deny, alleges that the local municipality mayor has been ordered to step aside with immediate effect. The ANC has condemned the leak as an act of indiscipline, emphasizing that internal communications should not be shared on social media. The mayor, Sonobele Mgenela, is currently facing fraud and corruption charges brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA). With his next court appearance scheduled for Monday 31 March 2025.
According to the regional coordinator Pulelo Mohale, the leak is a serious offense. “It is an act of indiscipline to leak internal information, we take this matter seriously and will be investigating” , said Mohale. He further said, at this point, the ANC is yet to confirm the authenticity of the letter. “We cannot verify the letter’s authenticity until we have conducted a thorough investigation,” he explained.
Meanwhile Mgenela has appointed Thembeka Dyantyi as the acting mayor of the Matatiele Local Municipality. According to the appointment letter Dyantyi is to resume mayoral duties as of 28 March 2025.
