Ntabankulu Taxi Operators Express Frustration Over T19 Road Rehabilitation Project

“The taxi operators felt frustrated because they didn’t see significant progress on the road despite the initial stop-and-go point.”

Taxi operators in Ntabankulu have expressed frustration over the T19 road rehabilitation project, which is currently underway between Phuthi and Ntabankulu town. The Border Taxi Alliance and Uncedo Taxi Association recently came together to voice their dissatisfaction with the project’s progress.

According to Madodekhaya Deshe, Chairperson of the Border Taxi Alliance, the taxi operators are concerned about the addition of a second stop-and-go point on the road. “The taxi operators felt frustrated because they didn’t see significant progress on the road despite the initial stop-and-go point,” Deshe explained.

The alliances decided to collectively voice their concerns to the authorities, who explained that the second stop-and-go point was added to expedite progress on the project. Deshe stated that the authorities assured them that this would allow for a smoother flow of traffic during the busy December season. “The authorities also agreed to the suggestion of a bypass that will lead them nearby N2, for taxi operators who are running out of time, which will provide an alternative route to minimize disruptions,” Deshe said.

However, Marhawu, a representative of the Uncedo Taxi Association in Ntabankulu, disputed the claims of collective action. “I can confirm that I was not part of it. I myself cannot go against a progressive development,” Marhawu emphasized. He claimed that he had taken disciplinary action against drivers who participated in the matter. Regarding issues with the T19 paperwork, Marhawu clarified that there was a minor problem with the drawings, which was resolved. The taxi associations hope that the project will be completed efficiently and effectively, benefiting both operators and the community.
