In a collaborative effort to foster public education and deepen democratic engagement among young South Africans, Government Communication and Information System under its pillar for development communication partnered with the Independent Electoral Commission and the KwaZulu Natal Department of Basic Education for a dynamic public education session at Thembalethu High School under Greater Kokstad Municipality in Harry Gwala Region on the 25 of April 2025.
According to the Regional Communication Coordinator for GCIS in Harry Gwala Lindokuhle Chiliza the initiative, set against the backdrop of Freedom Month celebrations, forms part of a broader campaign to educate young citizens about South Africa’s democratic gains, the significance of the Constitution, and the vital role of youth participation in shaping the nation’s future.
Continuing Chiliza shared, that the session was held under the theme “United in Resilience for the Defence of Our Freedom and Democracy,” and it carried special meaning as South Africa commemorates the 29th anniversary of the enactment of the Constitution the supreme law of the Republic signed into law by former President Nelson Mandela in Sharpeville.
The Regional Communication Coordinator mentioned that, during the session, learners were reminded that South Africa’s successful struggle for freedom remains one of the most inspiring stories in global history. Speakers emphasized the personal sacrifices made by countless men, women, and young people during the liberation struggle and urged learners to see themselves not just as beneficiaries of freedom, but as custodians responsible for defending and advancing it.
Representatives from the IEC conducted an engaging and practical teaching session on the voting process, including how to register, how elections work at municipal, provincial, and national levels, and why every vote counts. The IEC emphasized the importance of making informed vying and understanding the broader impact of active civic participation.
In highlighting the Significance of Freedom Month, historical and importance of the Constitution and the Freedom Charter, Lindokuhle Chiliza emphasised that, this year South Africa commemorate the 29th anniversary since the adoption of the Constitution which gave effect to the vision contained in the Freedom Charter. Both the Freedom Charter and the Constitution are products of long and prolonged struggles for freedom, justice, equality, human dignity, and a better life for all people. They are the outcomes of all citizens to fight against colonialism and apartheid, against oppression, subjugation, and dispossession.
In conclusion Chiliza further emphasized that, It is important that government continues to educate the youth so they understand the value of these rights and their role in safeguarding South Africans democracy. Learners were encouraged to not only celebrate the victories of the past but to critically engage with the ongoing work needed to realise the full promise of South Africa’s constitutional democracy. Active participation in the electoral process at all spheres local, provincial, and national was emphasised as an essential way for the youth to honour the sacrifices of previous generations and ensure a vibrant, resilient democracy for years to come.
