“Facu was asking the victim to allow him to put his hands inside her private parts (Uku faka isandla)”
The Maluti Magistrates Court has found the African National Congress Youth League Alfred Nzo Regional Chairperson Mawethu Facu guilty of a sexual assault, and he has been sentenced to undergo four years imprisonment or to pay a fine of R150 000.
According to the Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luxolo Tyhali, 35 years Mawethu Facu was convicted for three incidents of sexual assault that occurred between March and July 2024. “At the time of first offence he was 34 years old, and the first incident was committed on the 3rd March 2024 at a place called Ndaweni where the ANC Youth League held a car wash program, the second one on the 23rd of March 2024 at ward 5 where the was a tournament held by the ANCYL also and the last one sometime around the month of July 2024,” explained the NPA Spokesperson Luxolo Tyhali.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson further mentioned that, in all these incidents Facu was asking the victim to allow him to put his hands inside her private parts and he also touched her private parts. “ He was charged and convicted for sexual assault not rape, and he was sentenced to four years imprisonment or to pay a fine of R150 000. the fine was deferred,” said Tyhali.
However the ANCYL regional secretary Lihle Chalo shared that, Facu remain on step-aside until the matter is finalized. “If he were to serve his sentence then, he was not going to come back, but in this case he is appealing the verdict because he believes he is innocent,” said Chalo.
